We understand that as parents, you may have questions or concerns about some of the areas specific to parenting adopted children. We have a range of support services available and a dedicated team to help you every step of the way.
Some areas we can help with are:
- Identity and life story work
- Attachment and brain development
- Trauma, neglect and abuse
- Grief and loss
- Alternative parenting techniques
- Supporting transitions at home and in school
- Maintaining birth family connections
- Education related questions and concerns
Our adoption support services are delivered using a tiered approach.
Tier 1 - Advice, guidance and signposting, which is accessed through the adoption support duty service. You can email PASupport@wigan.gov.uk to request a call at a time that suits you or call us on 01942 487272.
Tier 2 - Our core offer of events, which includes a range of workshops for parents, children and young people, and parenting programmes.
Tier 3 - Specialist assessment and intervention. A social work assessment of need is undertaken which will identify the support needs for your family. Those adoption specific needs will be supported by an allocated worker. The assessment could recommend targeted support including therapeutic support accessed via the adoption and special guardianship support fund.
During the process you will be given the option to opt in to our newsletter to keep up to date with the latest news and advice.
Social events for families
Adoption support usually host two family events through the year. This offers an opportunity for parents and children to make connections with other families and enjoy a family day out in a supportive environment. We have enjoyed hosting many Christmas parties, indoor and outdoor events, and hope you will join us at future events.
We also run groups for children and teenagers to enable adopted young people to have fun in a safe environment with other young people who live in families like theirs.
The adoption support team is available from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday via telephone 01942 487272 or email PASupport@wigan.gov.uk.
