We often hear or get asked “Can I adopt if I am single?”
And the answer to that is, yes! You can adopt whether you are single, married or unmarried. Your marital status is absolutely no barrier to becoming an adoptive parent.
Kirsty's story
Hear what our adopter Kirsty has to say about her journey as a single adopter:
“I was worried if I could do this alone. All Together for Adoption staff I met on my adoption journey were encouraging and believed in me”
“The process was very smooth, and I was matched immediately following approval – I applied in January and my daughter came home in December! I had thought I might be a less appealing adopter as a single person but that wasn’t the case. We attended the adoption nurture group, which provided lots of lovely activity ideas for forming connections, and we met other mums and daughters who are still friends 8 years on.
I have attended numerous Together for Adoption training sessions, from evening courses to full day courses, I found all the Together for Adoption trainers knowledgeable and professional.
For anyone considering adoption, I would recommend speaking to adoptive parents via Together for Adoption. There are ongoing challenges, but being a mum to my amazing daughter is the biggest privilege and I am so grateful to Together for Adoption”
We run a welcoming and well-established Single Adopter Support Group, open to anyone from Stage 2 onwards in the adoption process.
This group offers a safe, supportive space where single adopters can connect, share experiences, and speak openly about the realities of adoption—the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
Our group brings together a diverse mix of adopters: those just starting out, some preparing for panel, others already approved and waiting, and even those who attend with their adopted child. It’s a small but close-knit community where honest conversations happen, and no question is ever too small, too personal, or judged.
Whether you’re seeking advice, encouragement, or simply someone who understands the journey, this group is here for you.
Our Feedback
Some of the feedback from the support group members:
- "The support I've received so far is amazing, so knowledgeable, confident and helpful”
- "Attending the solo adoption group was such a friendly and useful experience. I was nervous about walking in but soon got speaking to people. Met people around the same stage as me, some slightly ahead which gave me more contacts and support. It was great to speak to the lady who is just ahead of me in the process. All solo adopters with children there were so lovely and open with telling their stories of adoption. It is really given me a boost of confidence. Looking forward to attending the next one”
- “So much support from everyone that works from Together For Adoption and I would recommend them to anyone wanting to adopt”
- “Everyone I have met at Together For Adoption has been lovely and amazing”
- "I have enjoyed attending any Together For Adoption event or group. I have been to the single adopters’ groups, the new adopter groups, the summer party and I have regular contact with some people out of my prep group”.
